Mission: The M.A.R.O.O.N.S. initiative is an early intervention program that seeks to provide guidance and support for at risk youth in an effort to cultivate self-awareness, responsibility, and motivation, while broadening the lens through which these youth view the world and their respective roles in greater society.

MA.R.O.O.N.S. NET is the social engine connecting mentors, students, business owners, teachers, and community organizers in an attempt to track and reach all students. The goal is to replace the displaced, psychologically and physically through a holistic personal and online mentoring program. After participants complete steps 1 – 3 with Project M.A.R.O.O.N.S. INC they are invited to become a part of a movement to alter mentoring practices in growing pluralistic communities. Project M.A.R.O.O.N.S. inc desires all students to be able to take hold of their academic destinies regardless of their situation. We believe that everyone benefits from learning and working together within a community. If we do not find a way to include one another’s strengths, we will only magnify one another’s weaknesses. The question is always where do we begin? How can I contribute? Where do you fit in? Are you an occasional mentor who offers timely advice? Someone who is being watched and does not even know that they are a passive mentor? You may be invited. What about an intensive mentor, willing to develop the life of a young community member? You can still be in high school and fulfill this role! We are all peer mentors whether we realize it or not, but here is a tool to really hold one another accountable. Where do you fit in…

What is the role of the teacher?

Teacher:Their role is to assign behavior, academic focus, and attendance levels to each student in their calendars and blogs. Protégés, mentors, and apprentice levels will all have calendars that they can interact with but will also be monitored by their Teacher. Teachers are Intensive, passive, and occasional mentors and have the ability to help create additional programs with each group as well. They will be accessible by choice for contact regarding outside work and references.

What is the role of the protégé?

Protégé:If you have seen the slide show (interrupt the Pipeline) these are the youngest members of M.A.R.O.O.N.S. Net. They will be mentored by older student mentors and apprentices. Depending on the development of each student, they will go from protégé to being developed as a mentor and thus acquiring more privileges. Their page will be for blogging reflective writing assignments through the curriculum set by their mentor. Protégés will have their pictures, and calendars available but will not be viewed or contacted by anyone but their mentors and immediate teachers. They do not have the ability to obtain an apprenticeship, nor do they need to contact anyone except their mentor. Their parents will have access to their accounts as well.

Protégés are peer and passive mentors. They are impressionable and need intensive mentors and have multiple occasional, peer, and passive influencers in their lives.

What is the role of the mentor?

Mentor:Completed Steps 1, 2, 3, and have chosen a group of young protégés to mentor at a nearby school.

The sequence works as such:

8th to 3rd grade

9th to 4th

10th to 5th

11th to 6th

12th t0 7th

Same sex mentoring across the board is preferable but mandatory for everyone under 18. This means that for those who are mentoring others under 18, you must be of the same gender, male to male, female to female.

Will be able to access the students through the web but also will physically facilitate mentoring every week. Students will travel at least once a week to physically mentor the students, monitoring their grades, attendance, and behavior. This can be placed inside their calendar by any assigned staff at the school. A mentor will also have a provided or suggested curriculum. A portion of the curriculum will come through Steps 1, 2 and 3 of Project M.A.R.O.O.N.S. Inc. Mentors are intensive, peer, passive, and occasional in practice. Mentors and apprentices have the greatest influence on the protégés, their immediate peers, their surrounding community, and beyond.

What is the role of the apprentice?

Apprentice:A proven mentor will be eligible to apply for an apprenticeship. They have access to invite anyone into their profile page. They will network and converse among colleges, other mentors, businesses and apprentices. They will spend at least one day a week working in a field that they may be interested in. Aside from their internship, they will be able to communicate with coworkers about professional habits and customs. The goal is to create a networking tool for those who enter into the business world experience at an earlier age. Once again, the guidelines for a mentor apply to apprentice as well.

What is the role of the standard users (community users)?

Standard Users (Can we change this to community?)- Business Mentor, Community Mentor, College Mentor: Will all be on the same level but will be differentiated according to skill set. That way a mentor or apprentice can search for a specific need by their titles. In order to participate, you also have to complete Part 1 of the program, and part of the M.A.R.O.O.N.S. R.E.A.D. program to better understand yourselves and the stories of the students you are mentoring. Part 2 is optional for you to complete though the practical application of completing the concept of forgiveness will be beneficial for your own edification as well as discussing this portion with a mentee.

What is the role of the rugby network?

RugbySimple networking tool for rugby players. Project M.A.R.O.O.N.S. Inc encourages fitness and the main sport it endorses is rugby. This is a simple tool for the mentors to seek teams and professional support in the vast and growing rugby network. There are no requirements for this portion except that you have to be able to name all 15 positions.

Passive and Occasional Mentors

Occasional Mentors and Passive Mentors

You can sign up for M.A.R.O.O.N.S. Net but you cannot participate until you have submitted part 1, 2, and 3, to SubmitSteps@projectmaroons.org . Once these three portions are completed, your status will be updated, you will be invited to upload a photo, and from there you can choose a group.

Ideally, during and after you graduate from high school, you will have accomplished several goals. You will have aided in augmenting the academic progress of the next generation. You will have improved and monitored your own academic progress. You literacy level will have climbed. You will have real world experience. You will have made professional and social connections that will be beneficial at different stages in your life. You will have participated in reflective thinking and writing in your blogs. You will have a clearer idea about what it is you may want to focus on after high school. You will have created four to six new mentors that in term will help 20 other kids, to 100 other….. You will have successfully reconnected your community. You will have provided a comprehensive package to demonstrate what you have accomplished the last five years of your life. This you can send to colleges and it can aide in completing your portfolio.

Groups are organizations, whether a corporation, university, community group, primary school, correctional facility, church, or a newly created group. Once you create a group you must be defined by your role as a mentor. There are no random groups of people doing random things. Each group is defined by a mentoring/counseling skill. It can be a specific business, a certain academic discipline or an educational entity. Students must be able to search for a specific need as defined by the choices in groups.

This is an at will business relationship. For any reason deemed inappropriate usage of any Project M.A.R.O.O.N.S. inc systems, you can be banded from using M.A.R.O.O.N.S. NET. You can also abandon your account at any time as well.

The goal of the site is to promote growth as the purpose section defines. Appropriately you need to develop socially. This can be interpreted as a number of things for different people. The goal is for us to learn from one another. Any material that is deemed inappropriate will result in a loss of privileges. These can be seen at the terms of conditions site.

You earn points for blogging and networking and other predetermined activities. The points correlate to the amount of dollars some mentors/apprentices/protégés can earn for scholarships. Some schools offer points for those that have not been displaced but choose to make their school/community a better place. Can I be demoted from apprentice to mentor?Yes. If you are not employed you lose apprentice status but you can still act as a mentor. Can I be demoted as a mentor? Yes. According to the guidelines, every student signed into MAROONS NET has sought out a group of the appropriate grade level mentees or protégés. If you no longer are mentoring for any given purpose, your account will be deactivated. You will still have an account but it will not allow you to be actively involved in the benefits of MAROONS NET.

If you follow the program the agency will work with your local school to promote your worth the best that they can. Ultimately it is not the site but you.

You have the ability to create whatever is deemed necessary between the teacher and yourself. Reading suggestions can be made by any member of the mentoring community and the agency will provide some curriculum that is mandatory and suggested. Outside of in school mentoring, nothing outside of the school needs to take place unless cleared with Project M.A.R.O.O.N.S. inc first.

You will have two main options. Either the student/agency will seek out your services and skills as you post your group on the site and you fit geographically, or you will seek out a group of kids, or a school/district to work with. You can be utilized for:Finding employment Academic tutoring Vocational Advice College placement Creating community projects An array of advocacy programs That is why it is important that you create a group that serves a specific purpose. As you navigate through the site you will see how different groups define themselves. Furthermore you will guide whatever group or student you are mentoring through a specific part of their life. The goal is not for one person to do all of the work, but for multiple voices and talents to guide a student.
